THE WHOLE TRUTH

ABOUT THE BOOK

As part of my final project for a Visual Communication degree, I created an illustrated book with a humorous and bold tone, entirely composed of texts collected from anonymous confession groups on Facebook. In recent years, the trend of anonymous confessions in Facebook groups has gained significant popularity, and something about the dissonance between such intimate exposure and the public space deeply intrigued me. The anonymity provides people with the security to share their deepest secrets with strangers. There's a voyeuristic element to reading these confessions, almost like reading someone else's diary.

It was important to me to evoke a wide range of emotions in the reader—laughter, sadness, anger, discomfort, and empathy. Alongside humorous stories, I included those that hit right in the gut. I chose to incorporate both critical societal commentary and segments that are simply meant to entertain.

The book itself is colorful and joyful on the inside, but its exterior is black and white, wrapped in a semi-transparent cover that symbolizes the duality of concealment versus transparency. The book’s spine is exposed, allowing a glimpse of the colorful pages, contributing to the sense of exposure.

The book is divided into recurring themes, which can be identified by a color legend at the beginning. The list of themes includes: relationships, sex, animals, loneliness, absurd stories, family, body image, sexual assault, theft.

Each page includes additional details alongside the confession, such as the number of likes and comments, adding an anthropological interest in how people react to different things. The text is written in a monotype font reminiscent of a typewriter, giving it an archival feel.
